How to Make a Coil Pot?
- Form a base.
- Roll out a coil (about 1/2 inch thick).
- Score and slip to form a though connection
- Attach the coil making sure to fuse it to the bottom so it doesn't pull apart when it drys and shrinks .
- Thin and raise the pot wall using a flat pinch.
- Scrape smooth and shape using a rib or scraper.
- Repeat steps 2 through 5 until you reach the desired size or run out of clay.

Here is the rubric for this project
Face Jug Coil Pot-- Ceramics
Design—3 points
5 3 1 Face jug is based upon contemporary and traditional face jugs. Piece is 9” tall or wide. Piece includes a humanesque face. Emotion was added.
Technique/Craft— 12 points
12 10 9 The coil pot has been carefully crafted with clean/smoothed out coils. Piece includes either smoothed, carved areas or added on components; these components are exceptionally carved (not incised) or scored properly. Visible coils are consistent and even.
8 7 6 5 The coil pot has been crafted with an attempt to show clean/smoothed out coils but more work needed to be done. Piece includes either smoothed, carved areas or added on components; these components needed more care in carving (may have been incised) or not scored properly but are intact on the piece. The majority of visible coils are consistent and even.
4 3 2 1 The coil pot has not been carefully crafted with clean/smoothed out coils. Piece does not include either smoothed, carved areas, or added on components. Visible coils are not consistent or even.
Quality/Finish— 13 points
11 9 Student took care to finish each piece on all sides. Coils are scored and secured, do not show cracks. Nothing fell off. Piece is glazed with excellent application.
8 7 6 5 The piece was not completed with the same care on all sides as revisiting was needed. Coils are scored and secured, though minor cracks may be visible. Piece is glazed with uneven application though re-firing is recommended due to uneven glazing.
4 3 2 1 Incomplete, haphazardly finish of piece. All sides not addressed. Coils are show gaps or cracks. Pot is not glazed to match and application is uneven in multiple areas.

Video for 1/24/22
Next we are doing ugly face jugs/vessels. There is an interesting history to ugly face jugs and this video goes into that mystery quit well. Typically we would watch this video in class, but with me gone, I thought you all could watch it individually or in small or large groups and get it out of the way. Notice the lady's eyes when they tell her it doesn't have anything to do with the under ground railroad. She is so disappointed.
Once you have seen the video, sketch some ideas for your own ugly face jug. We are going to make it will coils instead of wheel throwing it but I will go over all of that on block day and you can get started right away next time this way. Sorry I am not there, but here is the video to watch.

History of Ceramics |
Montana is known for ceramics. Here is a TED Talk about why. Watch the video and then email me your reflection.
Would you consider going to a summer workshop at the Archie Bray Fountain? http://archiebray.org/workshops_classes/workshops_classes.html
Would you consider going to a summer workshop at the Archie Bray Fountain? http://archiebray.org/workshops_classes/workshops_classes.html
Then watch this hour long video that delves deep into what ceramics is and its history. Well the history of England specifically. Really the examination of the history of ceramics is a look at our collective history as humans.

Week May 4 |
Kilns and process |
This week we will look at two different potters. First Arthur Kettner and then the work of Miami Valley Pottery.
First
Watch the this clip from the PBS show The Art Show interviewing ceramic artist Arthur Kettner.
https://www.pbs.org/video/season-11-episode-1-s7if7q/
Check out his website too.
https://www.arthurkettner.com/about
What do you think about his art. Would you describe him as a ceramic artists of a sculptor? He obviously incorporates his time in the Navy into his art. How could you incorporate your life experience into a ceramic sculpture?

How about Rodney Veal? It takes guts to wear that outfit Yes?
At school we have what is known as an electric kiln. It is very controlled and for that reason the pots have a certain about of consistency when they come out. As long as they don’t blow up we know what is going to emerge from the firing. In the video they use a wood firing kiln. That means they are creating the 2400 degrees needed by burning wood. Their kiln is 450 cubic feet and can hold up to 5000 pots.
Along with connecting with the history by wood firing the “advantage” is the firing creates a lot of unpredictable outcomes. Depending on the pots placement and how the firing goes will alter the finished pot. All by chance.

Tile |
Here are some videos showing how ceramic artist create tiles. We typically do a carved tile in class to video these resources for inspiration. Then come up with a design that you could carve into a thick tile. At some point there is talk of actually installing these as back splashes near the sinks in the ceramics room. What would you choose to leave behind.
Email me a sketch of your design.

Week 4/20 - 4/24 |
Conversation Cups |
https://www.pbs.org/craft-in-america/education/service/
Go to the link above and watch the first story about Ehrenl Tool. Feel free to watch the whole hour-long program, but the first 10 minutes is about Ehrenl. He is a veteran that makes pottery that is supposed to spark conversations about soldiers, war and civilians. It is cool to see his skill on the wheel and his techniques in designing the finished cups. It is also interesting to see a potter putting such heavy imagery and personal meaning into his work. We often talk about form when it comes to ceramics, but this episode shows how to inject your own views and a narrative into the artform.
After you have watched the video answer the following questions.
How can a crafted object create an awareness of social issues?
Can adding a narative to a piece of art be open ended and how would that foster a discussion beyond the piece you create?

Conversation Cups part 2
"Its really hard for me to ignore those young guys who are still out there in the sand; it's really... close to my heart." - Ehren Tool
Ehren tries to make connections between the military culture and civilian culture through his cups. You are about to do the same thing about a veteran or information about current military service people.
Fill out the following form in preparation for that piece of art.

Conversation Cups Part 3
Now that you have a jumping off point think about some military imagery you could include in your piece. Ehren talks about the gas mask he wore in the Gulf War and how it is now sold as a children's toy. What other war imagery are you exposed to and some that you are not aware of.
design a conversation cup Part 4
Now that you have assembled all of this context and informations sketch out/plan your own conversations cup. We will just go with the assumption that you have mastered the ability to throw a small cup like Ehren. What would you add to it to make it start a social discussion? Stamps? Photos? Words? Sketch out what you would do and send me a picture of your design. Write a brief description to go along with your design explaining your thought process.
With the times being what they are, feel free to change this assignment up to focus on medical workers you might know rather than mitilary. Could you start the same kind of social conversation about nurses, doctors, or first responders? Take it were ever you might want to take it.
Email your final sketch to me [email protected] and I will add them to the gallery below.
